Korean Movie review 'Addiction' Review, A Devastating Love Hidden in a Twist

A soul that couldn't die because of love reincarnates into another person's body and approaches the person she loves. If we only look at the setting of possession (a phenomenon in which a soul enters another person's body), the beginning of addiction is somewhat cliche. The title 'Addiction' is embarrassing. However, as the movie progresses, it reveals the true nature of a terrible love that makes us realize 'addiction'.

Ho-jin (Lee Eol) and the innocent and beautiful Eun-soo (Lee Mi-yeon) are a married couple. Dae-jin (Lee Byung-hun), who lives with them, is Ho-jin's younger brother. Eun-soo is a happy woman thanks to her considerate and caring husband. However, Eun-soo's happiness doesn't last long due to a traffic accident that happened at the same time with her husband and younger brother. Dae-jin miraculously wakes up and approaches Eun-soo with the soul of the dead Ho-jin and all the secrets he had with his husband. Eun-soo feels Ho-jin's love and falls in love with him through Dae-jin's appearance.

At this point, the audience thinks Ho-jin has returned as Dae-jin and feels sorry for the simple structure of the film. However, the director takes advantage of the emotional confusion to gradually reveal the truth of 'Addiction'. Another necklace of Eun-soo, which was said to be the only one in the world, is found in the studio. Why does Dae-jin contain Ho-jin's soul?

Dae-jin wanted to be loved by Eun-soo, whom he loved before his brother, in this way. At this point, no one would hesitate to call Dae-jin's love 'addicted'. So what choice should Eun-soo make?

'Addiction' completely offsets the drama-like flatness that flows in the beginning with a chilling twist in the middle. It shows a 'creepy' love armed with a terrible obsession rather than a 'pure' love. However, it does not simply depict immorality. The solid scenario focuses on the relationship between the two men and women and makes the audience immersed with the slow breathing of the counterargument. The most notable is Lee Byung-hun as Dae-jin. His gestures and eye acting really give the audience the illusion that Ho-jin's soul has entered.

'Addiction' is a movie 'about people' rather than a movie 'about love'. Just as all love is ultimately an 'addiction' to people... .

사랑 때문에 죽지 못한 영혼이 다른 사람의 몸을 빌어 환생하고 사랑하는 이의 곁으로 다가간다. 빙의(영혼이 다른 사람의 몸에 들어가는 현상)란 설정만 놓고 본다면 중독의 시작은  다소 진부하다. ‘중독’이란 제목이 무안할 지경이다. 하지만 영화는 후반부로 치달을 수록 ‘중독’을 실감하게 하는 지독한 사랑의 실체를 드러낸다.

가정적인 호진(이얼)과 청순하고, 아름다운 은수(이미연)는 부부다. 이들과 함께 살아가는 대진(이병헌)은 호진의 동생이다. 세심하고 자상한 남편으로 인해 행복한 여인 은수. 그러나, 동시간에 일어난 남편과 시동생의 교통 사고로 은수의 행복은 그리 오래가지 못한다. 기적적으로 깨어난 대진이 죽은 호진의 영혼을 담고, 남편과의 은밀한 비밀까지 모두 간직한 채 은수에게 다가온 것이다. 그런 대진의 모습에서 은수는 호진의 사랑을 느끼고 사랑하게 된다.

이쯤 되면 관객들은 호진이 대진이가 되어 돌아온 것으로 알고 단순한 영화의 구성에 안타까워한다. 그러나, 감독은 그 감정의 혼란을 틈타 `중독`의 진실을 하나씩 벗겨낸다. 세상에 하나밖에 없다던 은수의 목걸이 또 하나가 작업실에서 발견되는 것이다. 과연 대진은 왜 호진의 영혼을 담고있는 것인가?

대진은 형보다 먼저 사랑한 은수에게서 이런 방법으로라도 사랑 받고 싶었던 것이다. 이쯤되면 대진의 사랑에 `중독`이라는 수식어를 붙이는데 주저할 사람은 없을 것이다. 그러다면, 은수는 어떤 선택을 해야 하는 것인가?

‘중독’은 초반에 흐르는 드라마 같은 평이함을 중반 이후 섬뜩한 반전을 통해 모두 상쇄시킨다. ‘지고지순한’ 사랑이 아닌 지독한 집착으로 무장한 ‘소름끼치는’ 사랑을 보여주는 것이다. 하지만 단순한 패륜을 그리지는 않는다. 두 남녀의 관계 설정에 비중을 두고 반박자 느린 호흡으로 관객들을 몰입하게 만드는 것은 탄탄한 시나리오 덕이다. 가장 주목할 만한 것은 대진역의 이병헌. 그의 몸짓, 눈빛 연기에서는 정말 호진의 영혼이 들어간 것 같은 착각을 관객들에게 심어준다.

‘중독’은 ‘사랑을 그린’ 영화라기 보단 ‘사람에 대한’ 영화다. 모든 사랑이 결국은 사람에 대한 ‘중독’이듯이….
