Harmon Circle, the basics of story creation

Understanding each stage of the Harmon Circle

1. Start: The protagonist’s comfortable state YOU

The first stage of the story is where the protagonist is introduced within their comfortable environment. This is the same as the 'before' photo. The protagonist aligns himself with the current situation, which allows him to later recognize the importance of change. In other words, it contains everyday content.

2. Need: The protagonist’s desire, need, NEED

The second step is to establish a desire for something the protagonist wants. This desire is an important factor in determining the goals pursued by the protagonist and provides direction for the rest of the story. We cover what you need.

3. Movement: The protagonist enters a new environment. GO

At this stage, the protagonist begins to take action. Emphasize that their needs are as important as what motivates action in the first place. The protagonist is thrown into a new environment, which means crossing the threshold between normality and chaos. This is the step of finding what you need. There will be a change in space.

4. Search: An attempt to solve a problem SEARCH

The protagonist faces many obstacles to achieve his goal. This leads to an attempt to find a solution or find an answer. It is the act of finding what you need. There are various attempts.

5. Discovery: Achieve your goals FIND

At the halfway point, the protagonist finds what he is looking for. However, new problems may arise during this process. This increases the tension of the story and adds new complexities. It is the moment of goal achievement where you get what you want. It can be said to be the result of a process.

6. Price: Success comes with a price TAKE

The protagonist eventually gets what he wants, but it comes at a cost. This price can often be large and tragic, which adds more depth to the protagonist's story. You will find what you need, but at a price. As the price is paid, there are consequences.

7. Return: The return of the changed protagonist RETURN

At this stage, the protagonist achieves the story's goal and returns to normal. However, what the protagonist experiences during this process changes him/her in some significant way. It shows a return to normal life.

8. Change: The protagonist’s deep change CHANGE The final stage deals with significant changes for the protagonist personally and in his surroundings. This often changes the world of the story along with the growth of the protagonist. Although it has returned to everyday life, the main character has changed. Although the environment is the same, the depth of the protagonist's life and thoughts must be different.

Structure your story like this.
